Surgical treatment of pediatric intractable frontal lobe epilepsy due to malformation of cortical development

Abstract Background Malformation of cortical development (MCD) is a common cause intractable epilepsy in children. In this study, the effectiveness frontal lobe (FLE) surgery children with due to MCD was assessed and its prognostic factors were studied. Methods Seventy-six patients FLE who received between January 2016 March 2018 Peking University First Hospital recruited study. All resected brain tissues demonstrated be MCD. followed up for at least 3 years. The clinical data prognosis analyzed retrospectively. Univariate multivariate analyses performed investigate correlations variables outcome (Engel classification). Results Sixty (78.9%) had Engel class I postoperative outcome. mean age 6.00 ± 4.24 Sixty-six (86.8%) daily seizures, 40.2% epileptic spasm, 33% extensive interictal EEG abnormalities, which, however, could not provide any helpful information localizing epileptogenic zones. About 29% normal MRI findings even by experienced radiologists, 26% lesion involving adjacent lobes.
